Dismantling works at Whorlton in progress

Our specialist team working on site at the Whorlton Suspension Bridge is making progress with dismantling works.

Following the sign off on the cable crane, dismantling works began. The team has currently removed all timber elements, including the carriageway and footway and all horizontal and longitudinal timber. This is currently being stored in the compound and will be tested to determine which timber is suitable for the donations requested across the local community.

The team has been working closely with Historic England to reach all conditions required to begin the removal of the chain elements. This has been achieved, and the team has begun to remove the hanger rods, which will be closely followed by the removal of the main chains.

Copy of the original engineer's diary

At the end of September, our team welcome representatives from the Institution of Structural Engineers.

Presentations were delivered by Blackett-Ord, VolkerLaser and Historic England to give the engineers a full overview of the project, the complex development of the cable crane system and the application of appropriate licenses to ensure the work could be carried out.

Following the presentations, the engineers were given the opportunity to tour the site with the team fully explaining the dismantling and restoration plans.

The guest engineers were also provided with a copy of the original engineer’s diary, which was a very popular feature of the day.
