North Yorkshire Moors Railway
VolkerLaser was contracted to undertake the £1.26m construction and installation of two new bridges on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR).
What we did
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is a historic heritage railway and the bridge renewal works formed part of the £10 million ‘Yorkshire’s Magnificent Journey’ project, which will ensure that the 180-year-old line will remain in service for generations to come.
As well as infrastructure renewals, the project is improving the railway’s accessibility and taking actions to conserve the heritage flora and fauna along the rail side. It has been made possible through funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the EU, NYMR’s local enterprise partnership and donations from supporters.
Work began on site with the dismantling and removal of the old bridges and finished with the installation of the new structures. The new bridges were fabricated and transported to site before being lifted into position – which need to be meticulously planned and executed.
Each new bridge is made of steel, weighs 40t and spans 15m. They will carry the railway over the Eller Beck river near Goathland, replacing the 150-year-old bridge that previously stood there.
