Works completed at Cookham Bridge
On behalf of VolkerHighways and Windsor and Maidenhead council, VolkerLaser completed repairs and waterproofing to Cookham Bridge, a key travel route between Berkshire and Buckinghamshire.
Constructed in 1867, Cookham Bridge is a grade II listed structure, with a 7.5 tonne weight limit, stretching 88 metres across the River Thames connecting Cookham and Bourne End. The existing surface required essential maintenance works to ensure the longevity of the historic bridge.
The full scope of repair and refurbishment works included, temporary works on top of the deck, trimmer beam replacement, bearing replacement, waterproofing, resurfacing and joint replacement.
The refurbishment process began with the removal of the existing surface. The next stage involved grinding and torch-blowing the deck in preparation for the waterproofing application. Upon completion of the waterproofing, our team also reinstalled expansion joints to both ends of the bridge.
To complete the necessary refurbishment works, full road closures across the bridge were put in place for the majority of the project, while pedestrian and cycle access has remained unaffected. During the latter stages of the project, traffic flow was maintained with two-way temporary traffic lights to minimise further traffic disruption.
