Awarding excellence within the sector

Together with Structherm, VolkerLaser beat out a record number of entries to be presented with the award at the lavish 8 Northumberland Avenue in central London. The longstanding INCA Awards demonstrate the vital role for EWI in improving the energy efficiency of buildings, lifting households out of fuel poverty and transforming local communities

The judging panel, consisting of industry experts from AgilityECO, BBA, CITB, CoRE, DECC and EAE, recognised the challenge of insulating the tower blocks without applying any additional load to the poor quality brickwork, and were impressed with the subtle 'light-to-dark' colour feature on the façade.

Providing energy savings and aesthetic improvements

The installation of EWI on the three 12-storey blocks of flats making up Worcester High Rise greatly improved their thermal performance and appearance and saved them from being demolished. Each of the 244 flats now saves around £145 per year in fuel and 610kg in carbon dioxide emissions.

Home to social tenants, operatives had to be very sensitive to the requirements of local residents during the works, who were still inhabiting the properties over the course of the project.

Utilising a Structherm external wall insulation system,VolkerLaser were able to revamp the iconic high-rise buildings to give them a clean, modern look in keeping with Worcester’s skyline. New windows and lifts were also delivered as well as a new roof-level common room on the highest floor in Cripplegate House; the Sky Lounge, offering what has been described as "the best view in Worcester". Thermal performance has improved greatly with the U value of the walls dropping from 1.82W/m2K to 0.30W/m2K.
