Construction News Specialist Awards shortlisting success for Woodhouse Tunnel

A major exercise in logistical expertise

As a major artery and vital piece of infrastructure within the centre of Leeds, Woodhouse Tunnel - which carries the A58(M) beneath the busy city centre and Leeds General Infirmary, as well as adjacent to the university – sees over 75,000 cars pass through every day. Originally built in the late 1960s, refurbishment and strengthening to the two-lane tunnel was identified as necessary in order to address over forty years of deterioration, and is part of a wider £25 million maintenance scheme of improvements to the Leeds Inner Ring Road.

“VolkerLaser’s largest contract to date, the success of the Woodhouse Tunnel project has been a testament to our careful planning and expert execution of this logistically complex operation. Utilising a combination of traditional construction techniques and specialist repair and strengthening services, we have worked in close collaboration with Carillion and Leeds City Council to give new life to a critical piece of the city’s infrastructure with minimal interference to the general public. Everyone involved should be very proud of what has been achieved over the past two years.”

Celebrating the specialist sector

The Construction News Specialists Awards are the only national awards celebrating the best specialist contractors in the UK.  With 18 targeted categories, the awards ensure that whatever size or specialism, there is an appropriate avenue to showcase their achievements.

Construction News Editor Rebecca Evans commented: “Construction News is proud that our Specialists Awards are the only national awards recognising the achievements of specialist contractors, whose hard work and innovation fuels the success of the UK construction industry. The construction industry contributes around 6 per cent of the UK’s GDP. The specialist contractors recognised on our shortlist often go unrecognized but make an instrumental contribution to the economy.”

The winners will be announced on 24 February 2016 at a glamorous ceremony at the Hilton Park Lane, where over 1,000 of the industry elite will join together for a night ofentertainment, celebration and networking.
