Completion of hostile vehicle mitigation barriers in Bath
VolkerLaser has recently completed the installation of hostile vehicle mitigation barriers across key locations in Bath as part of the City Centre Security Scheme. Delivered in collaboration with VolkerHighways and on behalf of Bath and North East Somerset Council (B&NES), this vital project enhances public safety.
The full scope of work involved the installation of a combination of static and sliding bollards across several streets, including York Street, Hot Bath Street, Cheap Street, Upper Borough Walls and Lower Borough Walls. Each location required bespoke solutions to ensure the installations integrated with Bath’s heritage.
Initial works began with ground excavations, carried out under permitting guidelines, and investigation works. During this phase, numerous existing underground utilities, such as electric, gas and water lines were discovered. To proceed with work, these utilities were carefully diverted allowing our team to access the necessary areas for the bollard installation.
Once cleared, the groundworks involved the use of blinding concrete and the installation of concrete shuttering to create a foundation for the sliding barrier. Service ducts were incorporated into the base, allowing for the underground utilities to pass through. During this process, our specialist team also installed feeder pillars and controller boxes.
Historic cellar structures were located beneath several streets and to protect these vulnerable features, the design enabled the bollard foundations to span across the cellar roofs.
After completing the foundations, the shutter was removed and a combination of Matador sliding bollards, and the SafetyFlex Truck Stopper bollards were installed. The surrounding areas were then reinstated using asphalt, road markings, imprint, fibre screed, paving slabs and granite sets to match Bath’s streetscape. A final jet wash completed the works, leaving the streets clean for public use.
The project was completed on schedule, ensuring the enhanced security measures were in place in time for the Bath Christmas Market.
